I have the fire alarm in the area and the AVG Free Edition on my Windows Xp. Do I need to block more spyware on my Internet?

To remove spyware from your computer use either spybot S&D or adaware.

Nope, xp is the most vultable os that hacker attack, firewall doesn’t really do much this day, you need live monitor, spyware and anti virus, get norton.

nope you do not need any more (only thing if you want to feel more secure is try upgrading your anti-virus protection) but you are good since Zone Alarm is not only a firewall but also Spyware protector, you can setup auto-scans to look for spyware aswell as being a firewall program.
Those 3 things are to look for protecting: Spyware, Virus and Firewall protection

You need to have an anti-virus program and a spyware program. AVG is a good anti virus and its free. AVGas is a free anti spyware program. I use both on my pcs. Do a search for these to download them. Also go to Filehippo.com–there is lots of good free programs there.

i have vista and only use windows firewall and windows defender which is real time detection. as long as you dont download and open email from trusted sites, you should be fine with your setup.

An anti spyware program would be a good addition to that. I suggest that you have 2 of them - one with real-time protection, and another for on-demand scan. You may try spyware doctor (free edition), lavasoft ad-aware, superantispyware.

Yeah, OK. I take it that’s ZoneAlarm free? That and AVG free AV have been around a long time and are very popular but they just ain’t much good.
A firewall will (or may) prevent anyone hacking in to your pc but that’s not enough. It’s very easy to get spyware on your pc and you need a firewall that won’t let your personal details leak out. Most firewalls leak, including ZoneAlarm free, Windows firewall, Norton, McAfee, etc, etc, etc.
A firewall by itself won’t stop malicious software (viruses, spyware, etc) getting on your pc. You need a good anti-virus program. Most will protect you from other malware besides viruses. Until 24 April 2008, AVG free AV only protected you against actual viruses. Version 8 now gives some protection against spyware as well, but AVG free isn’t that great at detecting crap.
Short answer is: get the best ‘anti-virus’ program you can as this will protect you against most malware. If you can afford it, get NOD32 or Kaspersky. An anti-spyware program won’t add that much extra protection. If you can’t afford it, get Avast. This will protect you from more than the free versions of AVG or AntiVir. Check it out:

Get the best firewall you can. This is easy. The best two are both free, use either.

Even then you aren’t completely safe (you never are). You need to keep all your programs up-to-date with the latest security patches. Use Secunia PSI.
SiteHound will hep protect you against known ‘bad’ websites.
Firefox with NoScript will help protect you against malicious code on web pages.
