Their have been lab testings when the testers put inm “fake viruses” to see which anti-virus worked the best one, free and bought.
Anti-Vir came in first place by far, getting almost every single one.
I also recommendgetting Anti Spyware: Here a are a list of few:
-Adaware (I think this is the most popular one)
…
-Microsoft Defender
…
-AVG
…
-Spyware Terminator 2
-Spybot Search and Destroy (I use this one personally)
-SuperAntispyware
ALSO, You need a firewall. Most people, would definetley recommend
Comodo Firewall:
You could also use your computers firewall, its not bad at all.
Just Go to Start > Control Panel (Right Colomn on start menu) > Firewall (or it will be under PC Tools)
I believe in picking a reliable vendor (whichever one you like and are comfortable with) and sticking with that one for their entire suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc.. you do not have to install everything else… those three would be the main)… and if your computer is really slowed down by a security suite… honestly, you are either misconfiguring it and/or your computer in general… .. or you really need to invest in an upgrade to your system.
I have just changed my Internet security to Kaspersky, the best I have tried so far.
As for spyware I now use Counterspy V2 , this is the most thorough program i have tried picking up and completely getting rid of any spyware and adaware.
You can download a trial version of Couterspy here and you don’t have to pay to get rid of the spyware after you scan like the others.
